For Canada, British citizens are generally eTA-required when flying to Canada but do not need an eTA when entering by car; a valid passport and other entry requirements still apply.
Flying to BUF Is Not the Same as Flying Directly to Canada
If your itinerary uses BUF as the gateway to Canada, the U.S. is not just an airport connection on a map. You must be admissible to the United States under the U.S. rules that apply to your passport and trip. After BUF pickup, you then make a separate application to enter Canada at a land port of entry.

Can You Lawfully Reach or Transit the U.S. to Get to BUF?
The U.S. Department of State says Visa Waiver Program travelers generally need an approved ESTA before traveling to the United States and must meet all VWP conditions. An approved ESTA allows travel to a U.S. port of entry to request admission—it does not guarantee admission.

Your Taxi Enters Canada by Land
Canada's current entry tool says the required document depends on citizenship/nationality, travel mode and documents held. For international travelers, the land-versus-air distinction is especially important.
Visa-Exempt / eTA-Required Nationality
If your passport normally requires an eTA to fly to Canada, you generally do not need an eTA
when entering Canada by car. You still need a valid passport and must otherwise qualify for entry.
Visa-Required Nationality
Canada says visa-required travelers need a valid visitor visa for land entry unless a specific exemption or status rule applies.
The air-only eTA trap:
some citizens of visa-required countries can qualify for an eTA instead of a visitor visa when flying to Canada
if they meet special conditions. Canada explicitly says that this does not replace the visitor-visa requirement
when arriving by car, bus, train or boat.
As of May 26, 2026, qualifying citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia joined Canada's limited eTA-for-air-travel program.
That change does not turn the eTA into a Canadian land-entry substitute.
How Common International Traveler Situations Differ
Many European nationalities are eligible for the U.S. Visa Waiver Program and are visa-exempt for Canadian land entry, but the exact passport matters. Do not treat “EU passport” as a complete immigration answer.
India is currently on Canada's visa-required list for ordinary visitor travel. The traveler must separately have the U.S. visa/status needed to reach BUF and a valid Canadian visitor visa or another applicable Canadian status/exemption for land entry.
Some visa-required nationalities can qualify for an eTA instead of a visa for Canadian air travel under special conditions. If entering Canada from BUF by road, Canada says a valid visitor visa is still required unless another specific exemption/status rule applies.
U.S. lawful permanent residents have a separate Canadian land-entry rule and do not need an eTA. Use the dedicated Green Card guide rather than applying the international visitor-visa rule.

A Canada Side Trip Does Not Automatically Reset U.S. Admission
International travelers who book a round trip—BUF → Canada and later Canada → BUF for the flight home— should check U.S. re-entry rules before leaving the United States.
Visa Waiver Program
The U.S. Department of State says a traveler admitted under VWP may generally take a short trip to Canada
and be readmitted for the remainder of the original 90-day admission period.
The Canada visit does not create a fresh 90-day stay.
B1/B2 Visitor
CBP says certain B1/B2 visitors may visit Canada for up to 30 days and re-enter within the existing I-94 period,
subject to continuing eligibility and inspection. The individual admission record controls.
Why this matters:
a traveler can be fully eligible to enter Canada yet still have a problem returning to the United States for the BUF departure
if the U.S. visa/status, ESTA/VWP admission period or other re-entry condition is not valid.
Children Can Add a Separate Authorization Question
CBSA says international travelers should carry acceptable identification for minors and, in certain family situations, consent letters and custody documentation. A consent letter is separate from the child's own entry document.

Yes, provided the traveler can lawfully enter/transit the United States to reach BUF and separately satisfies Canada's land-entry requirements for their citizenship, status and documents.
